Live Music Returns to HiSAM on July 1 with a New Monthly Jazz Night

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the magical synergy between musicians playing jazz together in front of a live audience. And you can experience it when in-person events finally return to the Hawai‘i State Art Museum on Thursday, July 1.
A new event called The Vibe will feature live musical performances and food and drink vendors once a month. The audience can relax and enjoy some cool jazz perfect for a summer evening in the spacious outdoor Sculpture Garden.

HiSAM’s partner for The Vibe, the Dae Han Ensemble, will perform every month with revolving guest artists. The ensemble is led by drummer Dae Han, who plays everything from jazz and funk to R&B, reggae and hip-hop. Don’t let his soft-spoken, humble nature fool you: Han is quite the accomplished player, doing drum duty at Blue Note Hawai‘i and touring internationally with Japanese rapper Shing02.
To kick off The Vibe, HiSAM and the Dae Han Ensemble will feature multitalented guitarist Gilbert Batangan. As part of Honolulu’s music scene for nearly 30 years, Batangan has performed with notable jazz artists, participated in recording sessions with fellow musicians, and regularly played live gigs at JazzMinds, Gordon Biersch and Nico’s Upstairs. He has also collaborated and performed with Nā Hōkū Hanohano winners such as Ginai Hill, Teresa Bright, Melveen Leed, Paula Fuga and Maryanne Ito, to name a few. Also joining this first event will be a surprise special guest.

A trip to the museum would not be complete without a look at the incredible artwork on display. The second-floor galleries will be open so you can take a stroll for some artistic inspiration before and after the performance. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from local pop-up vendors.
Live jazz, art, plus food and drink? Sounds like the perfect combination for a summer date night.
